Ready – Shoot – Aim

Most of us have heard the phrase, “Ready… Aim… Fire!” But sometimes the greatest growth comes from flipping that around.
Ready. Shoot. Aim.
As instructors and students, we naturally want everything to be perfect before we step onto the mat. We rehearse our forms, polish our techniques, repeat our combinations, and strive for flawless performances. We want to impress the audience. We want to prove ourselves. We want people to say, “WOW!”
There’s nothing wrong with pursuing excellence. In fact, martial arts teaches us to pursue it every single day.
But here’s the truth: perfection is never the goal—progress is.
Sometimes it’s okay for others to see the work in progress. It’s okay for them to witness the unfinished product because, in reality, none of us are ever finished. Every Black Belt is still a student. Every instructor is still learning. Every champion is still refining the basics.
There will be days when everything clicks. Your timing is perfect. Your confidence is high. Your performance is the very best you’ve ever delivered. Those are wonderful moments to celebrate.

And then there are the “OUCH!” days.
The kick is off. The board doesn’t break. You forget your form. You stumble. You miss the target.
Those moments don’t define you—they develop you.
Growth isn’t measured by never making mistakes. Growth is measured by having the courage to keep showing up, keep training, and keep improving.
Don’t wait until you think you’re perfect before stepping forward. Take the shot. Learn from the experience. Make adjustments. Then do it again.
That’s the martial arts journey.
Ready. Shoot. Aim. Repeat.
Because excellence isn’t a destination—it’s a lifetime of becoming.
