What My Black Belt Means to Me
We’re proud to share Ann’s reflections on what her black belt means to her. Her story is a reminder that perseverance pays off, and that the journey is just as important as the destination.

When I think about what my black belt means to me, the word that comes to mind is Perseverance. It has been a very long road to get here. After college, I trained in martial arts at two different schools, but life happened and I moved away from those schools before I was able to achieve my black belt. Then life happened some more…
When my kids were old enough for us to start training together, some of the basics came back to me quickly. I was excited to get back into training and advanced quickly through many of the color belt ranks. I was so proud when, first Gavin, then Grace got their black belts and, at the same time, it was hard not to get discouraged as I “no changed” in test after test after test. The frustration and disappointment were real and I considered quitting.
Then, I had to ask myself, what kind of example am I setting for my kids if I quit the first or second or third (or fourth) time things didn’t go my way. I have always tried to live into the idea that actions speak louder than words. So, I worked through my disappointment and frustration, kept showing up to class, started putting in daily effort to practice on my own, and asked for additional help along the way. I PERSEVERED. I wanted to prove to myself and those around me that hard work and perseverance does get you to the goal eventually!
I’m proud of myself for finally getting my black belt. I think my black belt means even more to me BECAUSE I had to work so hard to make it a reality. I want to thank my kids, Gavin and Grace, for blazing the trail and encouraging me along the way. I also want to thank Mr. and Mrs. VP for your support and believing in me even when I wanted to give up. It’s been a long road, but with perseverance I can finally call myself a black belt.
